White Men Can’t Jump Director Calmatic says New Soundtrack will Feature an LA-Inspired Playlist with New Music from Local and Mainstream Artists

The soundtrack for the White Men Can’t Jump sequel starring Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow just might prove to be unearthed gold for more reasons than one. Aside from being one of the most anticipated film sequels in 30 years, the soundtrack is equally as anticipated because it will feature a wide array of music from pop culture including LA’s underground street music – featuring original, authentic music from LA’s top underground artists and music influencers.

Last September, it was announced that the soundtrack would feature new music from the film’s co-star, American rapper Jack Harlow as well as popular table-turner DJ Drama. Harlow, who emerged on the music scene in 2015 with the release of several EP’s and mixed tapes is now a Billboard and MTV Award-winning artist signed to Generation Now Record Label.

With the LA independent/underground music scene just as relevant as the LA street basketball culture, it’s only a matter of time before the city unveils its hidden treasure – the talented, and highly competitive independent artists who have been serving LA authentic music for years while building and growing their fanbases.

Armed with an arsenal of mixtapes, EP’s, and LP’s from LA-based artists who capture the raw, real, and true sound of LA – White Men Can’t Jump Director Charles “Calmatic” Kidd II gave the audience a hint on what to expect musically at the first screening of the sequel, “I think Jack got something … we’re doing more like a playlist that’s inspired by the film. There were a lot of songs that didn’t make it onto the screen but will be featured on a curated playlist,” he explained.

Before he could even finish his sentence, the film’s co-lead Sinqua Walls asked the audience “How many people in this room are familiar with Chuck? So, the legacy of Calmatic – when he says a playlist, he’s watering it down.”

With all of the musical creative energy of the film’s stars Jack Harlow and Teyana Taylor, both of whom were music artists before taking on the big screens, one of the questions of the hour was “Who is on the soundtrack of the film?”

It’s just songs inspired by the film, so it’s a lot of local LA artists, a lot of people who wouldn’t get the opportunity to be on a big soundtrack that I feel like would be the soundtrack that Kamal, played by Sinqua Walls, would be listening to,” he explained.

We got Baby Stone Gorillas on the soundtrack, we got Tight Gun on the soundtrack, y’all probably never heard of him but if you know, you know. So, it’s definitely one of those things and it just kind of brings you into this world of LA street basketball culture. This is a LA story and it has to feel and sound like LA as well, he added.

The film’s official trailer featured “I Wish,” the 1995 hit Hip Hop single performed by American rapper Skee-Lo. White Men Can’t Jump will be available on Hulu May 19th, 2023.
