Kirk Hammett Says Fu*k Your Jokes, “If I Feel Like Stepping on the Wah, I Step on the Fu*kin’ Wah’

Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett is a man of many tastes. He loves horror movies, can surf the shit out of some waves, and apparently has the best weed in metal. Yet there’s one thing he gets ridiculed time and time again for not just loving, but over-relying upon: his wah pedal.

Well, it turns out he’s heard all your jokes and he doesn’t give a shit. In the vein of being more candid about his feelings in the wake of 72 Seasons‘ release, Hammett told Guitar World during a recent interview that he’s going to do what he feels is right for the song, even if it means stomping the ever-living shit out of a wah pedal.

“The wah enables me to mirror the inner voice in my head and in my heart. That’s what I’m hearing. All these manipulated notes and tones, because that’s what the human voice is like.

“We cycle through all these different tones and frequencies when we speak. When I step on that wah pedal and hear that click… well, I’m hearing that clicking in my brain and in my heart at the same time.”

You may not realize this, given how long he’s used wah pedals in his work, but there was a time when Kirk never used a wah pedal. Just listen to some of the early Metallica stuff — nary a wah or a whaaa in sight. It wasn’t really until the Black Album that he really went crazy with the effect.

Still, even if you think it’d be great for him to truly return to form and put the wah in cold storage for a while, Kirk doesn’t give a shit. He’ll do what he wants.

“I don’t care what anyone fuckin’ says. If I feel like stepping on the wah pedal, I step on the fuckin’ wah pedal, because it brings me closer to what I’m hearing internally. And that’s the whole point of gear — to help bring the thing you hear internally out into the external world.”

One place you’re sure to hear Hammett wailing on the wah pedal is any of the shows coming up in Metallica’s M72 World Tour. It kicked off just moments ago in Amsterdam, so there’s sure to be tons of wah from here on out. You can check out the dates below.
