Alt-Metal and Pop Collide in Living Dead Girl’s Latest Single “Dysfunctional” as They Announce the Reissue of Exorcism

With a mall goth look and a sound that blends alt-metal and pop, it’s easy to think of Florida-based outfit Living Dead Girl as a sort of American version of Babymetal — or maybe a less avant-garde Poppy. And while there’s certainly that collision of musical genres, this band should absolutely be on your radar if you enjoy either of those bands.

Later this year, the band is reissuing their 2021 debut record Exorcism with six new tracks and a re-imagined design that promises to expand on the original version. As such, they’ve released a new single, titled “Dysfunctional,” along with a raucous music video.

For Molly Rennick, the band’s songwriter and frontwoman, “Dysfunctional” and its music video are of two minds. On one hand, it’s about an often unpleasant time of life, while the visuals show the kind of party that’s equal parts one for the record books and any homeowner’s nightmare.

“‘Dysfunctional’ is a song I wrote knowing everyone can relate to it in some way; we all have been in a rocky relationship, or have one specific person in our families that we will always butt heads with. ‘Dysfunctional’ is expressing the frustration of having to deal with that person, but the song is fun and upbeat, making light that we have all been there. The music video was such a blast to film, it follows the different ‘dysfunctional’ scenarios that happen every day, and we show them throughout a huge party in a mansion. Everyone is at the party having fun, but at the same time everyone’s got their own problems going on.”

Will metal purists hate this? Probably. But it doesn’t seem like it was written for you — and that’s okay! If you’re willing to enjoy something without being an elitist dick about it, then be sure to give this band a shot. What may look like fluffy, poppy bullshit to some, you might just end up enjoying Living Dead Girl and their unique blend of alt/nu-metal and pop elements.

Living Dead Girl’s Exorcism Deluxe Edition will be available on October 6, but you can preorder your copy today. If you’d rather stream your music, you can pre-save it as well. The band is also heading out on tour next month, the full list of dates can be found below the music video.
