With a new album coming out in a little less than a month and a lengthy tour planned shortly after that, Corrosion Of Conformity has been pretty damn busy as of late. But while they were gearing up for some time on the road with the likes of Clutch, Whores, JD Pinkus, and Crobot, they were secretly searching for a new drummer. And it turns out they found one in Nick Shabatura.
I know what you’re saying — “Wait, wasn’t Stanton Moore drumming for them?” He was, but apparently the plan was always for him to record the new album Good Man/Baad Man and then find someone to replace him for touring purposes. Hence why today via social media the band announced that Shabatura was going to be handling things behind the kit.
According to the band, they had been looking for a replacement drummer for a while. They only stumbled upon their new drummer after reaching out to Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante, who recommended they take a look at Shabatura.
Alongside the announcement, Moore said he was 100% in favor of Shabatura taking the drum sticks from him:
“I approve this message! I went by rehearsals in Riffississippi the other day to meet and hang with Nick. He is an amazing drummer and a super cool guy. He showed up having completely done his homework and already sounds great playing with the band.
“The plan was always for me to make this record with the guys and then to find somebody to do the touring. Well, we found the guy and he is Nick Shabatura!”
It will be interesting to see how Shabatura fits within COC. One of the hardest things about drumming with this band is how their founding drummer Reed Mullin played. He was had a unique style to his playing that set him apart from other drummers, so it will be interesting to see how Shabatura adapts to that style. And that’s not to say having to play Stanton’s parts will be any easier, either.
