Cameron Diaz is heading to camp with a planned sequel to Troop Beverly Hills.
Clea DuVall is set to write and direct the feature that is in the works at TriStar Pictures and serves as the follow-up to the original 1989 comedy that starred Shelley Long. Diaz is developing the project as a possible star vehicle.
Plot details are currently under wraps. Laurence Mark (The Greatest Showman) serves as a producer alongside Diaz and the star’s business partner, Katherine Power.
Troop Beverly Hills centered on Phyllis Nefler (Long), a Beverly Hills socialite going through a divorce who decides to lead a troop of scouts. Craig T. Nelson, Betty Thomas, Mary Gross, Stephanie Beacham, Carla Gugino and Jenny Lewis rounded out the cast for the film that collected $8.5 million at the box office ($22 million today). It has since developed a cult following.
Ava Fries has a story credit on the original movie that is inspired by her real-life experiences while running her daughter’s Girl Scout troop. Pamela Norris and Margaret Oberman wrote the script for director Jeff Kanew’s movie that Sony Pictures released in 1989.
Diaz has previously starred in such Sony projects as the Charlie’s Angels franchise, The Holiday and Bad Teacher.
DuVall wrote and directed TriStar’s holiday comedy Happiest Season that starred Kristen Stewart and debuted on Hulu in 2020. DuVall is also known for acting in such features as The Grudge and Argo and will appear on the forthcoming season of The Last of Us.
Diaz is represented by LBI Entertainment. DuVall is repped by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
Deadline was first to report on the sequel.
