Lorde Underwent MDMA Therapy to Overcome Stage Freight

Ahead of the release of her new album, Virgin, this Friday, Lorde stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for an interview on Tuesday evening.

Lorde and Colbert began by discussing the x-ray-themed album cover of Virgin, which Colbert deemed to be “the most revealing and least erotic photo [he’s] ever seen.” The pair then discussed Lorde’s pop-up appearance in Washington Square Park in April ahead of the release of lead single “What Was That,” which was initially halted by the NYPD. “The antiterrorism unit was being very intense,” said Lorde.

Later, the two discussed Lorde’s upcoming “Ultrasound” tour, and how she underwent MDMA therapy to try and shed her lifelong stage fright affliction. It worked particularly well for the 28-year-old singer: “Literally, I woke up the next day, and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s over. I know it’s over.”Watch the interview below.

Prior to her Late Show appearance, Colbert’s team shared a video of him spoofing Lorde’s music video for “What Was That,” with him riding a scooter down a hallway in the studio in the same manner Lorde prowled through New York. You can watch that below as well.

Virgin was announced this past April shortly after the release of “What Was That.” Since then, Lorde has issued two more singles: “Man of the Year” and “Hammer.” The album will arrive in full this Friday (June 27th) via Universal Music New Zealand and Republic Records.

Up next, Lorde will launch the “Ultrasound” tour in support of Virgin this September, stopping in Chicago, Nashville, Toronto, New York, and more cities through the fall, with support from acts like Blood Orange, Japanese House, Chanel Beads, Jim-E Stack, and more along the way. Get tickets here.
