Steve Lacy is back with a new song, “Nice Shoes,” his first new music offering since releasing his breakout 2022 LPGemini Rights.
“If I had a dollar for the friends I would fuck/ I could buy a pair of really nice shoes,” Lacy sings at the start of “Nice Shoes” over a skittering beat, later bemoaning his loneliness, mental anguish, and urgent desires. Though Lacy claims that all he needs is his “guitar and serotonin,” his usual expressive guitar work is much harder to find on “Nice Shoes;” That is, until the last minute of the song, where Lacy slows the beat down and adds a muted electric guitar and light vocal harmonies. He then returns to the song’s anxious, synth-heavy groove for a final refrain. Stream “Nice Shoes” below.
“Nice Shoes” was written and produced solely by Lacy, who has spent the last couple years retreating after the success ofGemini Rights and its chart-topping lead single, “Bad Habit.” “Lowkey.. i aint dropping another album till yall go appreciate this one like yall needed to,” Lacy wrote on Instagram in May referencing Gemini Rights. “Go appreciate this some more then maybe just maybe we can talk about my next one.” Now, “Nice Shoes” will serve as the first single off Lacy’s forthcoming third album, Oh Yeah?, which has yet to receive a release date.
