It can feel like losing control completely, to let go of the reins, and by so doing, lose all sense of self. The story behind ‘Mania’ stems from a frightening allergic reaction that wreaked havoc on Belle’s life for months, and it caused him to act out in uncharacteristic ways, so much so that he almost didn’t recognise himself. Looking back now on that dark period, he is able to see it with a fresh perspective, and with his modern, pop-EDM soundscape, is able to embody all the disorientation and anguish, pulling listeners into the swift current that pulses with the prowling murkiness of a life unmoored from reality. Thankfully Belle is now feeling much better, and is able to look back on the situation and fully acknowledge that his breakdown, while not his fault, hurt people. He knows it’s up to him to make things right.
