Growing up in Malaysia before moving to Australia, Sanjay Michael now lives in Singapore, where he brings the influences of his musical upbringing to ‘Wall Street Blues’.
It’s easy to hear the inspirations of AC/DC and BB King in Sanjay Michael’s music; there’s an electric rock aesthetic that powers right through it, and he manages to capture the very essence of it – after all, it’s been his whole life. “Before I knew what love was, I knew I loved rock ‘n’ roll”, said Sanjay Michael.
His latest single, ‘Wall Street Blues’, is the centrepiece of a three track EP, that builds on the momentum of his debut full-length album, ‘Midnight’. The release sees Sanjay Michael explore love, lust, and money, and marks a transition in his creative journey.
To those outside of it, the stock market has always been shrouded in mystery, and those who play it, with their expensive suits, luxury cars, and huge mansions embody the idea that anyone of us could get rich quickly if we do it just right – without of course letting us in on that secret. The narrator of ‘Wall Street Blues’ is enticed by all this lavishness, and wants to give it a try – only to discover it’s a glittering mirage, with no substance to it. Despite giving it all he’s got, it’s never enough. With Sanjay Michael’s rock and roll sound, that builds on bluesy licks, punchy drums, chanting vocals, and clever lyrics, inspired by his own real-life trading experiences, we see the narrator walking away from it all, still just as confused as when he started out.
The lyric video for ‘Wall Street Blues’, created in collaboration with HIP Video Productions, plays like a daydream run wild. There’s private helicopters, wadges of hundred-dollar bills, and yachts as big as – or bigger than houses. All that money though is nothing if it’s not handled properly, and can disappear as quickly as it came. Those who’ve got it all and “have it made” are only one step away from having nothing at all.
