If you’re looking for an emotional rollercoaster that’s a fun but somber ride at times, St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 11 is for you.

While Alex is determined to get the senior visitors to partake in her educational programs, Ron is determined to acquire a piece of fudge from his favorite patient.

These moments contrast with the oddly dark plotline of Bruce and Joyce grappling with a will to live after confronting a patient with a Do Not Resuscitate order.

While St. Denis Medical struggles to navigate multiple tones simultaneously, it still strikes a balance and leans into each character’s comedic personality.

Plus, we get an update on Serena’s love life, though it might not be what we were expecting.

Everybody (Safely) Dance Now!

Alex’s constant stress and inability to have an enjoyable time thanks to her anxiety have been a recurring theme throughout the show.

Compared to St. Denis Season 2 Episode 10, her paranoia is toned down a little bit in this episode.

Her desire to find a way to make education fun and creative for the elderly community is admirable.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

However, as someone who’s sat through one too many PowerPoint presentations, I was having a hard time empathizing with her.

I appreciated the moment when the show revealed Alex’s personal motivations and background with someone in her life who could’ve benefited from this education.

Unfortunately, she was no match for the surprisingly lovable Chaplin Steve, who rallies the elders into a game of leisurely balloon volleyball and even sparks an impromptu dance party.

His charm offense is a little shocking compared to his initial appearance on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 6, when he and Bruce turned out to be a match made in hell, each matching the other’s insufferability.

While Chaplin Steve brought the energy, Alex ultimately still won when her educational portion of the elderly programming helped someone recover from a fall on the dance floor, marking an unexpected happy ending that her storylines don’t usually receive.

Also, the show checks in on Chaplin Steve and Serena’s ongoing fling.

When I mentioned that I wanted this poor girl to find some love, I didn’t necessarily think she would run to Chaplin Steve.

They make for an extremely unlikely pairing, and from the way Serena makes a face when he hits on her, I don’t see them lasting very long.

That might be my personal bias speaking, as I’ve been rooting for Serena and Matt since the St. Denis Medical Season 2 premiere set up their potential romance.

Fudge You!

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

Matt, of course, is as endearing as ever.

All the elderly patients agree with this sentiment, as one of Ron’s favorite patients takes a liking to him.

His natural kindness and ability to make anyone feel comfortable pose a tough challenge for Ron in winning back the patient’s affections.

Ron’s obsession with the patient’s homemade fudge squares and his apparent desperation are so ridiculous, but also fun to watch.

The fun stops for a bit when Ron begins to take personal digs at Matt, such as mentioning that he had left his wife.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

While he apologizes to the young nurse for being so harsh, Ron clearly hasn’t learned his lesson, as he ends up getting the fudge anyway.

Hopefully, he still picked up a thing or two from Matt about treating others with respect without an ulterior motive, though it doesn’t seem like he’s internalized that quite yet.

Did Someone Order an Existential Crisis?

Joyce and Bruce have a much more serious task at hand: finding the meaning of life.

They both desperately search for ways to disprove that their lives are centered around work and miserably fail.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

Especially for Joyce, who had recently been engaged and subsequently broken it off, this mission to find a reason to keep going hits particularly hard.

The humor arises from how they both go about this task the wrong way, with Joyce trying to find misery in her co-workers’ lives to prove that her own isn’t that bad.

It’s delightful to see them both eventually find a reason to be happy when they join the dance party and share in the collective joy.

Their story ends on a very dark note when the patient they had been talking to about death suddenly passes.

All three plots work well on their own, but the shifts in themes and emotions between them feel like a juggling act overall.
