BJ The Chicago Kid Covers The-Dream’s ‘Fancy’

BJ The Chicago Kid readies himself to take over summer 2021. The Chicago crooner does so by launching BJ Wednesdays, a weekly music series. He kicked it off with his remake of The-Dream’s “Fancy” from his 2009 Love Vs. Money album.

BJ took the original production, co-produced by Tricky Stewart and the Radio Killa himself, and added his modern flair to the track. Stepping away from the way The-Dream initially sang it, he experiments with computerized soul. He modernized the song’s ending, speeding up the tempo, adding chants, and switching up the beat.

“Obviously, ‘Fancy’ is one of my favorite songs from The-Dream and in my opinion, definitely one of the dopest, dare I say top 10 R&B songs to come out from our generation of music,” said BJ in a statement.

In an Instagram post, he shared that BJ Wednesdays will run June 30 to July 21, leading up to his brand new era.

Speaking on the impending era, he shared, “I’m just excited to share this new era of music and of me with the world. Quarantine has given me time to discover new levels of emotions that I can’t wait for my fans to experience sonically.”

The song arrives on the heels of his song “The Chi,” named after the hit Showtime show. Aside from these two songs, he appeared on “Bring It on Home to Me,” a Sam Cooke tribute featuring PJ Morton, Kenyon Dixon, and Charlie Bereal. He also had a song (“Letter 2 U”) on the Judas and The Messiah soundtrack.

BJ released his latest album, 1123 ,in 2019. It made Rated R&B’s top 30 R&B albums of 2019 list and later received a Best R&B Album nomination at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards.
