PJ Morton Reimagines ‘New Orleans Girl’ With Cheeky Blakk and Rebirth Brass Band

PJ Morton has refreshed his 2016 song “New Orleans Girl” from his Bounce & Soul, Vol. 1 project for the Take Me To The River: New Orleans soundtrack. The new version features Morton’s hometown pals, including bounce rap hero Cheeky Blakk and the famed Rebirth Brass Band.

Morton is one of many artists on the star-studded companion album. Other appearances on the extensive release include Ledisi, George Porter Jr., Snoop Dogg, Mannie Fresh, Big Freedia, and many others. It arrives on April 29 via Petaluma Records.

Take Me To The River: New Orleans is directed by Martin Shore and documents the “undeniable musical history, heritage, legacy, culture, and influence of New Orleans and Louisiana.”

The documentary, a sequel to Shore’s celebratory 2014 film dedicated to Memphis, Tennessee, premieres on April 22 at The Broad Theater in New Orleans. After that, it will transition to theaters on a national level.

Morton has been working overtime this year. The Grammy winner, nominated for two this year, is gearing up to release his next album, Watch the Sun. He recorded this LP at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

“The album is an unapologetically soulful painting about the true challenges in life and love,” Morton said.

First, Morton released “Please Don’t Walk Away” as the lead track from Watch the Sun. He later responded with a collaboration titled “My Peace” featuring JoJo and Mr. Talkbox.

Earlier this month, Morton, who appears on Robert Glasper’s Black Radio III, launched his spring My Peace Tour supporting his forthcoming album.
