Serpentwithfeet Announces New Theatrical Show ‘Heart of Brick’

Black queer nightlife will be the subject of serpentwithfeet’s new theatrical production, Heart of Brick. It will get its international world premiere Aug. 10 through Aug. 13 at the Kampnagel Festival in Hamburg, Germany.

According to press materials, Heart of Brick is a touching love story of two men who meet each other in a Black gay nightclub. The upcoming show will showcase seven Black dancers who identify as queer.

It will also feature music from serpentwithfeet’s yet-to-be-titled album, with Serpentwithfeet himself performing during the show.

Discussing Heart of Brick, Serpentwithfeet says, “The dance floor has been a medium for Black queer people to decompress and build community. Going out has given me incentive to go inward and I am a better person because of it. Engaging the body is essential to engaging the spirit. I have Proof.”

Heart of Brick was created by serpentwithfeet with a screenplay co-written by award-winning queer poet Donte Collins. The production is directed by Wu Tsang, choreographed by Raja Feather, and produced by The Joyce Theater Foundation.

Following its international premiere, Heart of Brick will be performed at The Joyce Theater in New York City from Sept. 15 to Sept. 22 as part of its 2023 fall season.

Two days later, the show will tour select U.S. cities, including Bentonville, Arkansas; North Adams, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; and more until Nov. 1.

Tickets for Heart of Brick are on sale now. The cost starts at $101.

In February, serpentwithfeet released the song “Gonna Go” along with a romantic video directed by Jonathan Aubrie Lewis.

At present, there is no announcement regarding whether the song will feature in the upcoming album, which will follow Deacon released in 2021.

Since then, Serpentwithfeet has shared a couple of other tracks, including “I’m Pressed” and “The Hands.” He wrote the latter track specifically for The Inspection, a film directed by Elegance Bratton.
