Allegories is the meticulously crafted experimental noise project turned electronic pop duo, intent on burrowing into the subconscious and unearthing the forgotten memories, imagined histories, and emotional fragments hidden beneath everyday life. Since emerging in 2008, the project has continuously shifted across genres, melding eclectic soundscapes with pop inclinations. The result is electronic music unconstrained by genre conventions and uninterested in stylistic boundaries, but no rush to reach the finish line. Three albums in eighteen years is proof of that.
Allegories records are explorations into the abyss; exciting, but with no guarantee that anything will be discovered. A rock band has a familiar template, one that can be manipulated and expanded upon, but the idea of “four chords and the truth” exists for a reason. Allegories operate more like a collision of sound and hopeful enlightenment. On every record, the duo has lost their way, hit obstructions, and pushed through the most uncomfortable moments, hoping to reach the surface before they run out of air. That desperation for sonic survival is exactly why it works.
Their music is at once earnest and abstract, often tricking listeners into believing they are hearing straightforward dance, indie, or rock music before the duo’s eccentricities shift the entire framework. Unguarded ballads coexist alongside layers of cut-up samples and fractured arrangements that draw equally from IDM, shoegaze, dream pop, psychedelia, and experimental electronic music.
Each Allegories record emerges through improvisation, trial and error, and a relentless pursuit of discovery. Within that exploration, however, are guiding lights. Their first record, Surreal Auteur, began as a commission for a noise tape, though the early improvisations naturally drifted toward pop structures. The sounds of ‘60s pop, Motown and The Beach Boys in particular, became foundational references. Their next record, Endless, was inspired by forward-thinking electronic musicians with one foot in the club. House music formed its DNA, though abstraction continuously bubbled to the surface.
Their newest record began with every song written on ukulele, almost as a dare, choosing the instrument least associated with electronic music. From there, those skeletal foundations were gradually erased beneath Jordan Mitchell’s eclectic arrangements until the songs transformed into entirely new forms. Adam Bentley then wrote a second song overtop of the evolving structures, before both versions, vocals, melodies, and arrangements, were fused together into something new. Through that process, more organic and traditional rock elements re-emerged. Guitars, absent from Endless, crept back in alongside live drums and bass. Shoegaze textures surfaced, and traces of Mitchell and Bentley’s decade spent together in indie rock band The Rest began to cut through the electronic experimentation.
There is always an attempt to write something resembling a pop song; at least the idea of one that exists in their heads. But the process inevitably reveals something they could never fully plan or envision at the outset. Slowly, the shape reveals itself. The North Star appears. The intent becomes clear, and recording becomes an exercise in chasing a feeling both members instinctively recognize. There has never been an argument about when a song is finished. In theory, this approach should leave the results open-ended, but some unspoken equilibrium always emerges.
By working through these elaborate and, from the outside, seemingly overcomplicated processes, Allegories continually arrive at something uniquely their own; a sound detached from trend chasing or artificial construction. It is an amalgamation of their shared history, mutual taste, and years spent creating together, thrown into a blender and somehow returned as a cohesive whole.
