Going Up North has released their new single “Love Is Lord Of All”. This time they give us an uptempo folk-pop melody with a chorus you remember after hearing it once. The song shows their talent for catchy choruses combined with a certain depth underneath. Soft female harmonies over a backing that hints at Fairport Convention or a late night encounter between The Waterboys and REM. The lyrics are a wry look at the mystery of love, while the music has a lively folksy bounce to it. The band is aided here by the brilliant David Vogt from the great Bergen band Real Ones on violin, and he adds some razor sharp solos that bring another dimension to the song.
The band Going Up North hails from Bergen, Norway. In their music you might hear faint echoes of Zeppelin and the Velvets, the next moment you’ll get a poppunk explosion or traditional sounding ballad. The lyrics are wry reflections of the futility of life with a haiku-like view of the world. There is a certain energy level in their music that truly comes to life in a live setting. They have released two albums, and are currently working on their third.
Their first album Stealing From The Thieves was released on Apollon Records in 2019, to good reviews in Germany, Poland, The Netherlands and Brazil. The Brazilian magazine World Of Metal even picked it as one of the best albums of 2019. The second album, Waiting For the Sun from 2021 received good reviews in the US, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands.
Going Up North are songwriter, guitarist and singer Jan Sigurd Vadseth, Vegard Henanger on guitar, Jon Eirik Søyland plays the bass, sings and plays the accordion on a tune or two, Hjalmar Rongevær III does the drums and percussion. Both records are recorded at Solslottet studios in Bergen, and are produced by Iver Sandøy, who is an experienced producer and musician, including drum duties for legendary Bergen metallers Enslaved.
