Feeling cosmically lethargic? Stuck in a psychic funk? The answer you’re looking for may be right here. Celebrated Calgary art duo Ryan Bourne (Chad VanGaalen, Ghostkeeper) and Rebecca Reid present Hair Control, an existential workout regime that melds throbbing, thoroughly psychedelic avant-dance pop with melodic, nuanced musings on love, death, sex, altered states, and apocalypse anxiety.
On their debut album Electric Pleasure, lo-fi beats are swathed in glowing synth environments, percussive textures, and guest appearances from Chad Van Gaalen and Tea Fannie. Bourne’s intensely catchy songs alternate with instrumental drum machine cruisers and patchworks of improvisational keyboard experimentation.
The songs feature spirals of arpeggiated synths surrounding cascading free piano gestures, tumbling hand percussion, field recordings, and washes of FX-smeared vocals, recalling everything from Kraftwerk and New Order to Daft Punk, John Maus, and early MGMT. Electric Pleasure is out now wherever you buy or stream music, and be sure to catch a “workout” near you at your earliest convenience.
