Zach Lieberman launched his solo project Holy Palmers’ Kiss in 2024 with the single “Bus Ride,” a song conceived among his former band Plums and finalized in his home studio a decade after the band’s final release.
Later that year, “I Still Love Your Dog” introduced the multi-instrumentalist’s unique voice in the swells of a sweet ode to his ex-girlfriend’s dog. “Horribly,” a collaboration with vocalist Melody English, followed in 2025, pairing both lighthearted and operatic harmonies with a gorgeous instrumental bed and encouraging even a first-time listener to sing along.
Lieberman harnesses elements of doo-wop and Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, imbuing his music with the simultaneous grandeur, intimacy, and immediate familiarity that made records of the bygone era mainstays in every home. However, his deft production and fluency across genres bring his work into the present.
Tongue-in-cheek 2026 offering “Hook” employs lo-fi, frenzied vocals delivered in the style of a Surfer Rosa-era Frank Black to challenge the proliferation of artificial intelligence in music production. Lilting, murky single “Proctor House,” out today, delivers an account of Lieberman’s work at a psychiatric hospital. The song begins in quiet contemplation and builds up to a celebratory burst, capturing the wide range of emotions wrapped up in his experience. A debut full-length release is expected in 2027.
“This song is about my time working at a psychiatric hospital, and mostly about my own mental health in relation to the patients I check in with. I sing, ‘I think I’m in love with you,’ because having feelings for a patient would obviously be inappropriate, but the larger point is that the line between staff and patient can feel less clear than you’d imagine. I’m not necessarily that much healthier than the people I’m caring for. The song also tries to inhabit their experiences with empathy, while depicting some of the things I’ve witnessed during my time working there.”
