Kat Greta has today dropped her new video and single titled ‘Audacity’. Kat clearly missed the memo that grief is supposed to arrive wrapped in slow piano ballads and tasteful acoustic guitars. Instead, ‘Audacity’ crashes in wearing shimmering synths, punchy drums, and enough pop confidence to light up an entire city block. It is the kind of song that tricks you into dancing before quietly reminding you that life can be spectacularly unfair. That balancing act is far more difficult than it sounds, yet Greta makes it feel completely effortless.
The production sparkles with restless energy while never losing sight of the emotional weight underneath. Every bright electronic flourish feels like a deliberate distraction from the ache hiding in the lyrics, creating a fascinating push and pull between celebration and sorrow. Greta’s distinctive vocal delivery adds another layer of tension, shifting between detached vulnerability and determined resilience without ever sounding theatrical. The result is pop music that refuses to flatten complicated emotions into easy answers.
The music video doubles down on that emotional contradiction in the best possible way. Melbourne’s glowing streets become a blur of movement while Kat Greta remains strikingly composed at the center of the chaos, capturing the strange experience of watching the world continue as your own reality quietly unravels. The fast paced visuals create a dizzying sense of momentum that perfectly complements the song’s themes without resorting to obvious symbolism. It is stylish, memorable, and refreshingly confident in its own vision.
‘Audacity’ proves that Kat Greta understands one of pop music’s greatest strengths. Sometimes the brightest hooks carry the darkest stories. Rather than wallowing in sadness or pretending everything is fine, she embraces the contradiction and somehow turns it into something exhilarating. This is sharp, emotionally intelligent indie pop that knows exactly what it wants to say while sounding like it is having an incredible time saying it. If this is the direction Kat Greta is heading, paying attention is no longer optional.
About Kat Greta & ‘Audacity’
Melbourne/Naarm-based multi-instrumental artist Kat Greta returns with her new single ‘Audacity’, out Friday, July 3. A melodically driven indie-pop anthem, deceptively enveloped with an underswell of grief, ‘Audacity’ and its accompanying music video are anchored in mourning and bolstered by shimmering electronic textures.
Following the release of her debut EP in November, which highlights Kat Greta’s unbridled pop-senses, ‘Audacity’ takes the pop dial and cranks it up to 10 with vibrant and energetic charisma.
Below the surface of ‘Audacity’s pop rhythm lies the complex feelings and multitudes of grief and acceptance. Written after experiencing immense loss, ‘Audacity’ is a track riddled with mourning and the battle of understanding – masquerading in dance vibrancy.
From the outset, Greta’s vocal distortion emulates speaking through a mask as one uncovers the bitter reality of the lyrics at hand. Accompanied by the instantaneous punch of the drums, high-spirited electronic elements and guitar, Greta’s distinctive artistry takes centre stage, embodying the confidence and conviction that sit at the heart of ‘Audacity’.
Co-produced by Melbourne producer Seetali Mack, this collaboration has allowed for Kat Greta to explore the themes and elements of the world around her unvaryingly as her own collapses in. The track brings light to the blatant absurdity of loss as the days roll in and out – remaining unchanged for the masses while Kat Greta is wondering how this could be. Kat Greta shares:
“‘Audacity’ explores the emotional whiplash of grief, where the world carries on as usual while yours quietly falls apart.”
Backed by the fast-paced neon-lights of Melbourne’s inner CBD, ‘Audacity’s accompanying music video – filmed and directed by Francis Biay – exudes a rapid and dizzy feeling as the video captures the feeling of life moving past. As Kat Greta is composed in the foreground’s juxtaposing stillness, the surrounds emulate a sense of wanderlust and liminality, in turn reflecting the thematic disconnect at the heart of the track.
Honest yet fun, ‘Audacity’ is a tarantella of emotion and vulnerability, adorned in sparkles and shimmering lights – made for those who want an introspective twist to their pop music. Come and ponder life in all its vibrancy, complexity, and ‘Audacity’, on Friday, July 3.
