L7s Loma Linda Reminds Everyone Who Still Owns the Snarl

L7 have today dropped their new single titled ‘Loma Linda’. L7 have never been particularly interested in behaving themselves, so expecting ‘Loma Linda’ to suddenly discover manners would be downright foolish. The new single comes charging out of the gate with the kind of grit, attitude, and melodic muscle that made L7 such a formidable force in the first place. This is a band that helped drag punk, metal, grunge, humor, and unapologetic feminist fury into the mainstream without sanding off the rough edges, and ‘Loma Linda’ sounds like those edges are still plenty sharp. It has that wonderfully obnoxious L7 quality where the song feels like it could kick down the door, raid your refrigerator, and then ask why your music collection is so boring.

What makes the track especially fascinating is its history. The original demo dates back to 2003, recorded with Janis Tanaka during her earlier time with the band, and somehow the bones of the song still feel remarkably at home in L7’s present tense. New vocals, new lyrics, and additional recording have transformed an old piece of unfinished business into something that feels alive rather than archival. That is the trick here. ‘Loma Linda’ does not sound like a dusty artifact dragged from a vault for sentimental purposes. It sounds like L7 found an old weapon in the basement, checked to see if it still worked, and immediately started swinging it around the room.

The timing gives the song an emotional weight that sits beneath all that glorious noise. With Janis Tanaka returning to the lineup following the heartbreaking loss of Jennifer Finch, ‘Loma Linda’ carries a sense of history without becoming trapped by it. L7 have always understood that rock music can be both brutally honest and ridiculously fun, often within the same three minutes, and that balance remains one of their greatest strengths. The guitars have bite, the rhythm section hits with purpose, and the whole thing carries the swagger of a band that has spent decades learning exactly how much trouble it can cause before someone calls security.

After more than four decades, L7 have earned the right to coast, which is precisely why it is so satisfying that they apparently have absolutely no interest in doing so. ‘Loma Linda’ feels immediate, irreverent, loud, and unmistakably theirs. It connects the band’s past with its present without treating either one like a museum exhibit, and that is a pretty impressive trick for a group whose legacy has already been cemented in punk and grunge history. If this is L7’s last hurrah, they are approaching the exit the only sensible way: guitars blazing, volume irresponsibly high, and enough attitude left in the tank to make everybody else look underprepared.

About ‘Loma Linda’

Legendary feminist rockers L7 kick off the first leg of their final world tour, dubbed The Last Hurrah Tour, tomorrow October 6 in San Diego. They have commanded fans to their feet and their ballot box for over four decades with an effortless blend of punk ethos, heavy grunge, melody, socio-political anthems and humor and are thrilled to connect with fans globally one last time!

Before tragically passing away earlier this year, Jennifer Finch gave the band her blessing to carry on with the planned tour and welcome back L7’s bass player from 1999-2001 Janis Tanaka to replace her. Today, the band has unleashed their new single “Loma Linda.” Pulled from the archives, the demo was originally recorded in 2003 with bassist Janis Tanaka with music and lyrics completed this week! As an expression of love and gratitude for Jennifer, Janis and their badass fans, the band is offering the new song as a free download on the band’s website for the first week. After that it’ll be available across all streaming platforms.

Donita Sparks shares,

“This new single marks the return of Janis Tanaka being back in L7 on bass after the sadness of losing Jennifer Finch a couple of months ago. I was searching the band’s archives and came across this unfinished track from when Janis was in the band. It still sounded rather fresh and very L7 so we recorded new vocals with new lyrics and some other additional tracks and cranked it out in a couple of days ahead of this upcoming tour.”
