Q&A
What do you think of the current state of indie rock?
It’s the new frontier, it’s the coliseum, it’s the most authentic nights out you’ll find for under £20 that I know about. There’s so much breathtaking, bone-shaking talent out there at the moment. There’s such a drive to be authentic, to make music like you mean it and to share it as humans have always needed to. It’s a beautiful scene to be a part of and a great wave to ride. Get into it.
How has the London scene treated you so far?
Beautifully. We love this place, we’ve all made it our home, and we throw our gigs here like it. Everything we do is for our audience, we want to give them everything we’ve got, and that’s got a great response. We’re all just looking for a little wild and free at the moment, and that’s really resonated with the crowds that have come together so far. We love ya, London, ya filthy animals.
This is a really anthemic song. Who are some of your favorite anthemic rock bands?
Definitely, we all grew up on rock music like Oasis, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, ELBOW, FOALS. And who doesn’t love a bit of Stones or Zeppelin? Brit-Rock is this incredible genre that passes down the decades, and we wanted to chuck our songs in the ring. The UK’s got such incredible gig and festival culture, we wanted to make something you could come together and sing with the crowd. I remember getting warmed by pyros watching Biffy Clyro one year at Reading and the crowd was a choir, it was wicked. Currently we’re loving The Meffs, Fontaines DC, IDLES, CMAT, lots of bands with capital letters for names.
Do you normally write in short bursts of inspiration or was this song a one time inspiration?
Cal the singer works in bursts and breakdowns, the band is really diligent, creative and playful. Put ‘em together, works out. Our rehearsal space is a proper fun time. When you get crafters and grafters together, it’s just fun to build stuff. Some songs come together really quickly like wildfire, others take more blood, sweat and toil, but everything we do then gets refined like good whiskey. Not everything works, some songs get left behind, others keep going and going till we’ve got something we’re really proud of.
What was the actual recording process like?
Loud and lively. We wanted to capture that angst and recklessness that drives it, but also nail the joy and optimism that are really the spirit of the song, and we found the right studio for the job. We worked with the incredible Ary Maurit at QoS Audio, who properly helped us level it up and find new layers to it so we could use the light and shade of it and then hit with a wall of sound when it was time to go in. Good day.
Do you have plans to tour this year?
We’d love to, we want to take this party anywhere that needs it. Currently we’re playing a series of wall-shakers in indie venues across London as we build up our hometown fanbase, and hopefully we can then take that on the road as soon as possible. We’re busy in the studio getting our first EP together so we can send that out to anyone who can’t make the big smoke anytime soon and create communities that way for starters. “Do you ever feel like life’s sprinting past you in a race you didn’t know you were in?” says frontman Cal. “We wanted to make something that speaks to that frustration and that drive to become your best self, the fear that you might not. We’re all just going for GOLD, aren’t we?”
