The City Gates have today released their new album titled ‘Chimera’ via Icy Cold Records and Velouria Recordz. On ‘Chimera’, The City Gates sound like they have perfected the art of staring into the void while making it feel strangely beautiful. The Montreal group has always understood how to weaponize atmosphere, but this record pushes their sound into something larger and more consuming. Every track feels drenched in neon rain and cigarette smoke, balancing icy post punk pulse with towering shoegaze textures that seem to stretch endlessly into the night. A lot of bands aim for cinematic scope and end up sounding like they bought one extra reverb pedal. The City Gates actually earn it.
‘Chimera’ moves with the confidence of a band that knows exactly what kind of world they want to build. The basslines carry that classic darkwave hypnosis while the guitars smear across the songs like headlights cutting through fog. What makes the album hit harder is how alive it feels underneath all the haze. These songs breathe. The live drums have weight and momentum, giving the record a physical pulse that keeps the dreamlike atmosphere from drifting away entirely. The production never feels sterile or over polished. ‘Chimera’ feels like the work of artists who have fully settled into their identity while still finding new corners of darkness to explore. The decision to record and produce the album within their own studio clearly paid off because every sound feels intentional and deeply personal. The City Gates have delivered a record that is heavy without brute force, melancholic without self pity, and immersive without disappearing into abstraction. In a genre crowded with bands trying to recreate the ghosts of post punk history, ‘Chimera’ actually sounds haunted by something real.

The band is now releasing their new album LP “Chimera’’ on May 15, 2026, via Icy Cold Records and Velouria Recordz — a dark, expansive 8-track record that unfolds like a nocturnal landscape, blending post-punk urgency with shoegaze atmospherics — brooding rhythms meeting shimmering walls of sound. Each song lingers with a haunting, dreamlike intensity, caught somewhere between collapse and transcendence.
The lyrics drift between intimacy and decay, lingering on themes of isolation, memory distortion, and emotional disconnection, delivered in a stark yet haunted voice. They dissolve into the atmosphere — half- whispered reflections on longing, loss, and the
blurred edges of perception — channeling existential tension and urban alienation through fragmented, observational imagery. Recorded, mixed, and produced at Velouria Studios, the band’s own studio in Montreal, CA, the album took shape f rom within — built on live drums, guitars, and bass driven through amps, and the haze of vintage synths,with tone, space, and atmosphere gradually coming into focus.

To support the release, the band will head out on a European tour beginning May 29 in Berlin and continuing through early June (dates below).
