How does it feel to be working together long enough to be releasing your 3rd LP?
It’s starting to get pretty surreal. When you start a band, you have big exciting dreams, but you’re not really able to truly picture what it’ll be like in 10 years. It’s amazing we’ve made it this far and we’re really proud of what we’ve done and the music and experiences we’ve created together. Here’s to 10 more!
Is there a lot of good bluegrass and americana music in St. Louis?
There is! Hunter Peebles & The Moonlighters and Mattie Schell come to mind. There’s also lots right outside those genres. It’s an amazing city with a powerful music scene and a legendary music history. The more we dive in to the musical lineage of St. Louis, the more we’re inspired by it and desire to contribute to it. It’s a cheap city for artists and musicians to live in, and it’s very old (for an American city) and it’s also been somewhat forgotten by the outside world which actually creates a lot of strange urban noir which inspires our music. And yet, it’s got a charmed, working class feel in parts that brings an important foil to the weirdness.
The vocals sound fantastic. How do you decide who sings which parts on which songs?
The songwriter sings their song. We have two main songwriters and singers in the group, which we dig. A lot of our favorite bands (The Grateful Dead, The Band) had two or more lead singers and we always loved that approach. Makes it really feel like “a band.”
Who are some old school R&B artists that influence you?
There’s definitely an R&B flare throughout as well. Oooo! We love hearing that. We’re all musical junkies and “old souls” to an extent. We’ve always been really into The Meters, Chuck Berry, Donny Hathaway, James Brown, Prince, and even more obscure stuff like Johnny Adams (greatest singer ever??). Singers like Otis and Aretha and Marvin have been in the air in popular culture for us ever since we can remember. So all that music runs through what we do.
What was your experience like on “The Voice”?
It was a wildly variable thing. Sometimes it was amazing and incredibly exciting, other times it was drawn out and uncertain. At the end of the day, it changed the way I sing and perform, and brought some local notoriety to the band, which we welcomed. I rediscovered “pop music” (so to speak) but doing the Voice and that kind of thing showed up in our album, particularly on the song “Juniper.”
What are your touring plans for the rest of the year?
We’re playing as much as we can (which is not enough!) throughout the American Midwest. We’ll be in Nantucket in December and are already planning 2027. Staying ahead of the curve in the booking world is a high art.
