Throwlight, with some help from DJ Sku, today release their new video and single titled ‘No Kings’. Throwlight apparently looked at the increasingly crowded musical landscape and decided the obvious solution was to throw punk, metal, rap, hardcore and enough attitude into a blender and hit purée. ‘No Kings’, featuring DJ Sku, is the result, and thankfully it sounds considerably better than that recipe has any right to. The track comes charging out with the confidence of a band that has absolutely no interest in asking permission before making noise. There is weight here, but there is also swagger, groove and just enough melodic instinct to keep the whole thing from turning into a sonic bar fight with no exit.
The music video matches that energy with a presentation that feels appropriately rough around the edges without looking like it wandered in from a rehearsal room five minutes before filming. Throwlight come across as a band that understands the visual side of heavy music without getting trapped in the usual grimacing, staring into the camera routine. The performance has personality, and that matters. You can practically feel the chemistry that comes from musicians who have been making music together for years rather than four strangers assembled because somebody thought their Spotify numbers looked promising.
Then there is DJ Sku, whose presence adds another layer to the already unruly mix. The hip hop elements do not feel stapled onto a metal track for novelty points. They are part of the architecture, giving ‘No Kings’ a rhythmic personality that lets the song move between aggression and groove without suffering an identity crisis. Somewhere between the riffs, the beats and the vocal attack, Throwlight manage to make genre fusion sound less like a marketing strategy and more like four people simply making the kind of music they actually want to hear. Imagine that. Music made because it sounds good.
‘No Kings’ is ultimately the kind of video that reminds you why independent music is still such a gloriously unpredictable place. Throwlight are not trying to become the next conveniently categorized version of something you have already heard a hundred times. They are taking pieces of punk, metal, rap and hardcore, throwing them into the same room and seeing what survives. The answer is a track with teeth, personality and enough groove to keep the head moving long after the video ends. If Throwlight’s debut album “Monster” was the introduction, ‘No Kings’ feels like the band kicking the door open and politely informing the genre police that their shift is over.
“As a band made up of 1st generation immigrants and American citizens, we care for our friends and families that live here. Immigrants built America, and now they’re being attacked to distract from daily evils being done by the 1%. We are devastated by the current administration’s actions aimed to instill fear and terror on the people that live here. The people have always been stronger than the people in power. Our song was made to vent our own frustrations with what’s going on currently in the US, and give our audience a soundtrack for the revolution. No Kings, not then, not now, not ever. Fuck ICE.”

Hailing from South Orange County, Throwlight cultivate a dynamic, genre-fusing sound from the diverse musical backgrounds of its members. Drawing from across punk, metal, rap, and hardcore, this fusion results in a unique style that combines heavy grooves, catchy leads, and rap verses designed to keep listeners’ heads swinging.
Inspired by iconic acts, notably Deftones, Rage Against The Machine, Faith No More, Ice Cube, The Beastie Boys, Linkin Park, the band’s deep established bonds, having known each other since childhood, also infiltrate their stylistic sound.
Throwlight emerged through Kevin Betz and Chris Ellis joining to create a metal band, with underground rapper Rocom stepping up as lead vocalist. The addition of Rocom’s longtime collaborator in rap, King of Somewhere, finalized the band’s distinctive sound as he introduced his synth sounds leading to a blend of hip-hop with a heavy metal soundscape. Throwlight unveiled their debut album Monster independently in 2024.
