Sugar Ray has never really gone away in the minds of millennials like Julia Jacklin, who grew up on Mark McGrath and co.’s upbeat blend of alt-rock and pop. That’s why she decided to cover their hit single “Every Morning” for Triple J. Check out the Australian singer-songwriter’s slightly more downtempo version below.
“I’ve liked it since I was a little kid,” Jacklin says about the track. “I love any way to connect with my younger self as much as I can. I feel like we were singing it together: me now, and her back then. I have always enjoyed how spirited this song sounds… I don’t know, the song just makes me feel grateful to be alive. It makes me connected to the source of life.” (As a fellow millennial, I concur.)
Jacklin is a little more than a month out from releasing her next album, The Gem, which drops September 25 via her new label, 4AD. She named the LP after a pub in Melbourne, where she recorded it with her band.
