Uncle Ryano puts the power in the wings of the turkey in his new single, ‘The Turkey Fought Back’, from his album, ‘Voices In My Head’.
California-born, Texas-grown, Louisianan, Uncle Ryano, turns a familiar American holiday ritual into one of uprising with a comic twist, and a premise that gets stranger the longer the song goes on.
The story is set outside Muskogee, Oklahoma, where a turkey farmer, having enough of losing his flock to coyotes, decides to set a television in the coop, with the idea that the noise and movement would keep the predators away. The plan works, but there’s one flaw – the tv set has only one channel, one that just happens to run classic kung-fu marathons. Night after night, the turkeys gather around the tv to watch films such as ‘Enter The Dragon’, and by the time Thanksgiving arrives, and the farmer is ready for the slaughter, he encounters the results.
Wings now move “like Bruce Lee hands”, Jackie Chan gets a mention, and the chorus informs us that “the peckin’ order got rearranged”. The second verse lets us know that this crisis in the coop has spread across the whole of the US, with homeland security on alert, and turkey off the Thanksgiving menu in favour of honey-baked ham – let’s just hope the pigs don’t get the message!
The song is accompanied by an animated music video, directed by Uncle Ryano himself. Reminiscent of an 80s cartoon, the clip follows the turkeys as they break out of their coop – at times dressed in karate outfits – and take on farmers, pilgrims, Native Americans, and even Santa Claus.
