Brandy Reimagines Iconic A Different World Theme Song for New Netflix Sequel Series

Brandy A Different World

Grammy Award-winning R&B icon Brandy has officially released her brand-new rendition of the beloved theme song for “A Different World.” The freshly reimagined track serves as the opening theme for Netflix’s highly anticipated 10-episode sequel series to the classic sitcom, which premiered globally on September 24.

The “A Different World” theme song, co-written by original cast member Dawnn Lewis, holds a rich musical history, having famously been performed by Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin, and Boyz II Men during the show’s original late-80s and 90s run.

While Brandy’s rendition keeps the recognizable and nostalgic lyrics intact, she introduces a modernized R&B sound to welcome a new generation of viewers to the fictional HBCU, Hillman College.

The Netflix sequel series shifts its focus to Deborah Wayne (portrayed by Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of original fan-favorite couple Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. The storyline follows Deborah’s arrival at Hillman for her freshman year as she navigates academics, relationships, and campus drama alongside a new class of students.

Original series stars Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne) and Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) return to reprise their iconic roles, alongside returning cast members Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell. The series is created and executive produced by Felicia Pride, who also serves as showrunner, alongside Debbie Allen, who returned to direct the premiere.

Brandy’s reimagined version of “A Different World” is available to stream now, with the official audio available via Netflix Music on YouTube. The sequel series is currently streaming exclusively on Netflix.
