Missy Elliott Announces HBCU Band Battle and Innovation Summit in Home State of Virginia

Missy Elliott HBCU Band Battle

Global music icon and Virginia native Missy Elliott will host the inaugural Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Taking place at 4:00 p.m. at Norfolk State University’s William Dick Price Stadium, the showcase will bring together the elite musicianship and tradition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to celebrate their profound influence on modern music and entertainment.

The highly anticipated afternoon event will feature live performances from four of the nation’s premier HBCU marching bands:

Norfolk State University “Spartan Legion” Marching Band

Virginia State University “Trojan Explosion” Marching Band

Elizabeth City State University “Sound of Class” Marching Band

Hampton University “Marching Force” Marching Band

“Virginia will always be home, so bringing something like this back means a lot to me,” Elliott shared regarding the upcoming event. “HBCU bands have always brought so much energy, creativity, and culture to music. I want this to be a celebration of them and something that inspires the next generation to dream even bigger.”

The band battle serves as the centerpiece of a wider, weekend-long celebration honoring Elliott’s enduring cultural impact and her deep ties to her home state. The festivities build upon the legacy of “Missy Elliott Day,” which was officially established by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin four years ago during a dedicated street-naming ceremony recognizing her global contributions to music.

Beyond the stadium performances, the weekend will also feature the Missy Elliott Innovation Summit. The dedicated educational program is designed specifically for college students and high school seniors, providing an interactive forum to explore the evolving intersections of technology, music, education, and entrepreneurship.

Corporate partners supporting the weekend’s focus on community, education, and innovation include Virginia Natural Gas, Dominion Energy, Micron, and the Steven L. Washington Law Firm.

Tickets for the Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle are available for purchase now at www.HBCUBandBattle.com.
