What To Know
- Criminal Record Season 2 Episode 4 sees a major development in June’s relationship with one of Hegarty’s team.
- Executive producer Elaine Collins explains June’s decision.
Considering everything June (Cush Jumbo) is dealing with this season — working with her rival Hegarty (Peter Capaldi), tension at home with Leo (Stephen Campbell Moore), and trying to catch a killer and stop a bomb plot, just to name a few — we can’t exactly fault her for the decision she makes in the May 13 episode ofCriminal Record. TV Insider spoke with executive producer Elaine Collins about just that. Warning: Spoilers for Criminal Record Season 2 Episode 4 ahead!
June and Leo do give counseling a try, but to say it doesn’t go well is an understatement. They’re fighting, he says she “radiates chaos,” and he brings up the fact that her son decided to move in with his dad. Meanwhile, JP (Luca Pasqualino), also part of Hegarty’s unit, is frustrated, trying to keep informant Billy (Luther Ford) calm as he remains undercover to help them stop the extremist group. June’s also dealing with a Hegarty who reminds her that in this unit, Intelligence, they focus on putting out fires before they start; he’s sorry that the kid is dead, but he’s not going to blow up his operation to make an arrest after they find the murder weapon in her stabbing.
So, is it any surprise that after that, June and JP turn to each other and sleep together? After, he brings up his girlfriendand Leo — he looked him up — and she tells him that Leo thinks she’s never happier than when she’s disappointed. JP tells her she’s perfect. Then, they focus back on the case.
So, why did June sleep with JP? It’s about both what’s going on at work and Leo, Collins said.
“Cush’s point of view about that with her character was this is just sort of something that she needs to do to [deal],” she explained. “Her head’s kind of exploding. And I think it’s less about falling in love with somebody and more about it in the moment.”
And yes, it’s also that JP seems like a nice guy. “He’s also incredibly good looking,” Collins pointed out with a laugh. “There’s got to be that in it, too. And Luca is so charming and so is his character. So I think it’s all of those things.”
