I never expected to be on Audrey’s side about anything.
But Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 16 made it clear she understands Connor more than it seemed, even if her support of Mandy left something to be desired.
This season has brought the McAllisters’ personalities into sharper focus, which makes the comedy stronger because there’s human emotion behind it, and this episode was a strong example.

Mary and Audrey Both Had Surprising Roles On Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 16
Audrey’s support of Connor was surprising, but so was Mary’s siding with Mandy against Pastor Jeff.
Mary’s anger when Mandy first suggested that God could be female made sense for her character. Mary has always been extremely religious, so of course, that would offend her.
For that reason, I didn’t have Mary calling out Pastor Jeff on Georgie and Mandy’s First MarriageSeason 2 Episode 16on my bingo card, but in a way, it makes sense.
Mary is probably one of the only people who can speak up when Pastor Jeff is erring on the side of alienating people from the church, since she’s been a loyal employee and member for many years.

She might not have liked what Mandy said, but if it’s a choice between Pastor Jeff apologizing and Georgie and Mandy never visiting their church again, she’ll encourage Pastor Jeff to make things right.
Plus, he complained to her that people were accusing him of causing Mandy to lose her job — surprisingly, once the anger died down, most people didn’t like the way Pastor Jeff treated Mandy on air either.
All of this talk about getting Mandy her job back or Pastor Jeff causing her to lose it is a bit of a rewrite of history, though.

The recap scenes on Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 16 even confirmed that Mandy was the one who walked off the set and announced she quit.
I don’t blame her for that. As a person who values the rights of everyone to express their real beliefs, I fully supported her decision to quit rather than apologize for having an unpopular opinion about God.

However, she should own that decision. She chose to stand up for her principles, so blaming Pastor Jeff or anyone else for her lack of employment doesn’t make sense.
That said, I could understand why she resented Pastor Jeff’s refusal to apologize to her in return and his decision to instead try to manipulate her into returning to church, while making her feel like she was the only one who did anything wrong.
Even Mary thought that was beyond the pale, and she’s as religious as they come and probably the most offended person in town by Mandy’s comments.
So if she was pushing Pastor Jeff to apologize, it made sense for him to listen — although allowing Georgie to advertise his business at church was a step too far.
Nobody goes to church to hear commercials, and it didn’t feel right to me to have one during the service. Then again, Fred Fagenbacher using the situation to promote himself as the tire guy who prays to the same God the town does wasn’t cool either.

Will Religious Differences Ruin Georgie And Mandy’s Marriage?
Georgie has had to adjust to the McAllisters and their beliefs, which are different from his, since he and Mandy got married, but religious differences are among the hardest things to navigate in a marriage, especially when both people are wedded to their beliefs.
Although their conversations about it were funny and didn’t result in a fight, it did seem like this issue could end up putting a wedge between them.
Do you think Georgie and Mandy will grow apart over religious differences?

Georgie believes strongly in the power of prayer, while Mandy thinks that’s nonsense, and that’s hard to reconcile.
Of course, there are many couples who have different religious beliefs and learn to navigate that while respecting each other’s differences, but we already know that Georgie and Mandy are doomed.

Plus, this conflict seems likely to spiral into other issues soon.
If Mandy is now working at a station where her unique viewpoint is valued, she’s likely to express opinions about religion, politics, motherhood, and other topics that Georgie and his mother don’t agree with, which could lead to bigger problems later.
I’m not sure why the weather girl is expected to talk about anything other than weather, but since that seems to be part of the job, it’s clear it’ll eventually become a source of friction.
I’m curious not just about how Georgie will handle that, but Jim and Audrey, since they were slow to support Mandy the first time it happened.
Audrey could surprise me, though, considering how empathetic she was about Connor’s situation.

It Was Refreshing For Someone To Accept Connor’s Differences
Traditional jobs aren’t the best fit for everyone, especially neurodivergent people — and like Sheldon, Connor is autistic-coded even though it’s never been made explicit.
In the 1990s, it was far harder and less common for people who don’t fit the mold to nope out of a 9-to-5 and find something that fits them better, especially people with an artistic bent, and it’s rare during any decade for parents to support a child’s artistic interests instead of pushing them toward a “real” job.
Connor does need to make money in a way that works for him, but turning his music into a 9-to-5 job isn’t the solution. However, I applaud Audrey for at least trying to respect her son’s differences.
I’m rarely on her side, but I felt a lot better about her after this story.
