Catie Turner has today released her new single and video titled ‘Who Am I?’, from her debut album, ‘Blue Alchemy’, slated for release on October 16. Catie Turner has apparently decided that having an existential crisis is much more enjoyable when you put a catchy melody underneath it. ‘Who Am I?’ arrives with the sort of breezy, sun drenched energy that makes you want to roll down the windows, crank the volume and briefly forget that knowing who you are is supposedly one of life’s major responsibilities. Turner takes that familiar spiral of second guessing, comparison and wondering what everyone else thinks and turns it into something bright, funny and ridiculously easy to sing along with.
The retro VHS aesthetic is a particularly good match for a song about trying on different versions of yourself. Turner finds herself in a wonderfully offbeat 70s inspired world where dress up becomes something considerably more existential, especially with the animated version of herself tagging along like the tiny cartoon embodiment of every intrusive thought you’ve ever had. It is playful without becoming disposable, and the visual style gives the song another layer of personality. Naturally, Catie Turner does not simply have an identity crisis. She apparently needs a whole wardrobe, a cartoon alter ego and a vintage fever dream to work through it.
What makes ‘Who Am I?’ work so well is the contrast between its sunny exterior and the mess happening underneath. Turner is dealing with some genuinely uncomfortable questions about identity, approval and the strange business of turning yourself into a public facing version of yourself, yet she never lets the song collapse under the weight of all that introspection. There is wit in the uncertainty, confidence in the vulnerability and enough melodic sparkle to keep the whole thing moving. It feels less like a perfectly polished declaration of self discovery and more like someone actually thinking out loud, which is considerably more interesting.
As the final single leading into Blue Alchemy, ‘Who Am I?’ feels like a pretty effective introduction to where Catie Turner is creatively right now. She has always had a knack for making deeply personal thoughts feel strangely communal, but here that instinct gets an especially infectious treatment. The result is a music video that is colorful, clever and just the right amount of ridiculous, while the song underneath it manages to make self doubt sound almost celebratory. Turns out you do not need to have yourself figured out to make a great pop song. You just need enough honesty to admit you have absolutely no idea what you are doing.

Free flow is terrifying. It’s hard to trust what comes out without one hundred revisions and some flowery language. The entire bridge was written in my notes as one continuous stream.” The new single, mastered by Hallie Melton, is also the first song where Turner wrote a bridge that didn’t rhyme. “I am a Virgo Rising, which isn’t important to 99% of people, but to the 1% that get it, they get it.
