Fusing the flaunt of stoner rock with the spirited tones of film noir, Cover Zero creates “The Innocent One” around a wailing guitar and a steady, propulsive drum beat that pushes listeners into its movie-like tension. The single pulls inspiration from Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, turning the classic “innocent man on the run” narrative into an alt-rock anthem. “I wrote this song after binging some of the early Alfred Hitchcock films, most notably The 39 Steps. It was inspired by its story of an innocent man on the run and its themes of mystery, paranoia, and romance,” lead singer and guitarist Tyler Goldstein explains. “I wanted the music to draw listeners into that cinematic journey with a cool, immersive atmosphere.” Co-produced and mixed by Ben Green (Bartees Strange, Fairweather), the fiery song was mastered by Eric Lagg (The Kid LAROI, Diplo, Lil Nas X). “The Innocent One” features Sonny Wilde on drums and tambourine, with Goldstein rounding out the recording on guitar, vocals, bass, and even a cowbell mug, giving the track its DIY spirit.
Cover Zero is the brainchild of Long Island, New York native Tyler Goldstein, who picked up the guitar at age nine and has lived and breathed music ever since. Goldstein draws on the energy of The Beatles, AC/DC, and The Who, carrying the songwriting weight of Queens of the Stone Age, Ty Segall, Foo Fighters, and Black Sabbath. Formed in Washington, DC, Cover Zero borrows its name from a high-risk football blitz scheme, mirroring the band’s dedication to give it their all and put all of their energy into each project they release. A lifelong love of classic 30s and 40s cinema runs through Cover Zero’s sound. This inspiration is showcased on their previous single “Dr Griffin,” a song loosely penned about Dr. Jack Griffin of The Invisible Man and his journey, thirst for power, and downfall.
