Grandmas House Hit the Buzzer on ‘Baby You’re A Winner’ and Somehow Make Sincerity Look Cool – First Look (Video Premieres) – Jammerzine

Grandmas House have today released their new video and single titled ‘Baby You’re A Winner’, from the upcoming debut album of the same name, dropping on August 21st via Brace Yourself Records.

Grandmas House have officially entered the stage of their career where every new release sounds like the band kicking down another locked door with steel toe boots and a grin full of bad ideas. ‘Baby You’re A Winner’ arrives attached to the Bristol quartet’s debut album of the same name, due August 21st via Brace Yourself Records, and it feels less like a victory lap than a dare. The song barrels forward on rubbery basslines and razor wired guitar interplay while Yasmin Berndt’s voice hovers over the whole thing like somebody trying to start a fight at the back of the venue and mend your broken heart at the same time.

The video leans fully into absurdist game show chaos and thank god for that. Too many bands making “quirky” rock music videos end up looking like they rented a fog machine and discovered irony five minutes before filming. Grandmas House actually understand camp. The whole thing has the twitchy energy of late night public access television melting under studio lights while the band stomp through the madness with total commitment. Every frame feels knowingly ridiculous without ever slipping into smugness, which is a rarer skill than most indie bands would probably like to admit.

Musically, ‘Baby You’re A Winner’ lands in that sweet spot between post punk muscle and genuine emotional warmth. The riffs lock together with almost irritating precision while the harmonies give the track this huge, breathing sense of release. Ali Chant’s production deserves credit for letting the song feel expansive without sanding off its grit. Nothing sounds overly polished. Nothing sounds trapped in a spreadsheet. The track still sweats. It still snarls. It still sounds like four people in a room pushing each other harder instead of four laptops emailing stems across continents.

What really makes the single stick is the emotional core buried underneath all the swagger. The song’s central idea of trying to drag someone you love out of their own self hatred could have turned unbearably sentimental in lesser hands. Grandmas House avoid that trap entirely by making the whole thing feel messy, frustrated, loud and deeply human. Berndt delivers every line like she’s trying to shake somebody awake rather than offer tidy self help slogans. That tension between affection and exasperation gives the track its pulse.

If this title track is any indication, Baby You’re A Winner might end up being one of those debut albums people pretend they discovered before everyone else caught on. Grandmas House already had the live reputation, the critical hype and the festival credentials. Now they’ve got the songs to match the mythology forming around them. ‘Baby You’re A Winner’ sounds like a band stepping into a bigger spotlight while still refusing to brush the dirt off their boots first. Exactly as it should be.

About Grandmas House & ‘Baby You’re A Winner’

Bristol’s Grandmas House unveil plans for their long-awaited debut album, Baby You’re A Winner, ahead of an August 21st release on Brace Yourself Records.

The news is accompanied by the release of the album’s title track, ‘Baby You’re A Winner’, a taut, tight three-minutes of expansive rock that’s all springy basslines and interlocking guitar riffs. At the center of it all is guitarist and vocalist Yasmin Berndt’s syrupy, raspy bark which rises above sumptuous vocal harmonies as she touches upon themes of lifting those you love into the light you’ve always seen them in.

Speaking of the track, the band offer: “‘Baby You’re A Winner’ is a rock n roll love anthem about seeing the beauty in your loved ones when they can’t. It’s about the frustration of your friends or partner not being able to see themselves for the winner they are – an ode to bring you up when you’re feeling down.”

The single is joined by a tongue-in-cheek, game show-style video, directed and produced by Clump Collective, that adds to the sense of playfulness in the album’s title.

‘Baby You’re A Winner’ is a perfect illustration of the elevated musicality of the album that bears its name. Linking up across the record’s twelve tracks with producer Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Yard Act), Baby You’re A Winner showcases a real levelling up for Grandmas House: more layered and involved than their trio of previous EPs – Grandmas House (2021), Who Am I (2023), Anything For You (2025) – with a greater focus on the use of vocals and harmonies to embolden the meticulously crafted arrangements.

It’s the sound of the quartet – completed by Poppy Dodgson (vocal, drums), Zoë Zinsmeister (bass, vocals) and Polly Jessett (guitar) – bringing a greater sense of nuance and space to their music, while deploying myriad genres to maximum effect. From the righteous, elasticated rock of recent single ‘DOG’ to the syncopated post-punk and brass blasts of ‘Dance’ and on to the chamber folk ambiance of closer ‘Spring’, Baby You’re A Winner is the most authentic, realized portrait of Grandmas House to date.

The songs here navigate a precarious balancing act between sadness and catharsis, ultimately landing in a place of salvation – the product of the band’s tight-knit friendship, this album is their gift to the world, born from a period of grief and hardship but emerging from the other side with profound love and strength. It’s a testament that even when the odds are against you, anyone can be a winner.

“We wrote this album about the existential crisis of going through life,” explain the band. “It’s about love and infatuation but also about grief and loneliness. It’s emotional, powerful, sad and a good time all at once.”

It’s been a hugely successful spring for the band on the live front, including a much-lauded stint at SXSW as well as a largely sold-out European tour last month with shows in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and France, and recent UK festival dates at The Great Escape, Dot To Dot, Bearded Theory and more. Grandmas House have toured prodigiously in recent years, opening for Big Special on a recent UK tour and for Arxx across Europe and supporting the likes of Idles, Pigsx7, Katy J Pearson, TV Priest and more, while they also recently sold-out their own headline tour of Germany in 2025 and have hit up festivals including Reading & Leeds, Sŵn, Green Man and more.

The band’s early EPs and singles have been widely lauded at UK press and radio, with praise from the likes of NME, DIY, Clash, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, So Young, Loud and Quiet and countless others, and radio support from Steve Lamacq, Chris Hawkins, Craig Charles, New Music Fix and Amy Lamé on BBC 6 Music, Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1, Matt Wilkinson on Apple 1, John Kennedy on Radio X and more.
