SexyTadhg Lights Up Tradition With Electric Joy on ‘The Slag Of Carlow Town’

SexyTadhg has today released her new single titled ‘The Slag Of Carlow Town’. The track feels less like a static track and more like a living, breathing space already in motion. SexyTadhg leans fully into the pulse of traditional Irish sounds while refusing to treat them as museum pieces. The fiddle lines dance with intention rather than nostalgia, cutting through the mix with urgency that feels both modern and communal. That balance becomes the song’s core strength, a celebration of heritage that never feels constrained by it.

The sheer physicality of the arrangement is impossible to ignore. Distorted guitars surge beneath the folk instrumentation, creating a tension that mirrors the energy of a live crowd on the brink of eruption. Every shift feels instinctive rather than engineered, as if shaped by real rooms and real reactions. That sense of immediacy gives the track a loose, almost theatrical quality that aligns perfectly with SexyTadhg’s wider creative world.

Lyrically, the song opens a playful yet pointed space where Irish identity expands rather than contracts. Surreal party imagery brings together queer icons and cultural figures in a way that feels humorous while carrying a quiet sense of defiance. Inclusion is not framed as a distant ideal but as something already unfolding, even if it still carries a dreamlike edge. That contrast between reality and imagination adds depth beneath the track’s celebratory surface.

More than anything, ‘The Slag Of Carlow Town’ feels like a clear statement of direction. This is not experimentation for its own sake but the confident shaping of a distinct artistic voice. Every collision of sound and image carries intention, resulting in a track that feels expansive, joyful, and rooted in connection. It lingers not by demanding attention, but by inviting the listener into something larger and more shared.

About SexyTadhg

Released following the success of last year’s EP Sexy, the new single comes with the announcement of a flurry of UK tour dates including appearances at The Great Escape, Beyond The Pale and All Together Now.

Bringing together layers of traditional folk instrumentation with distorted guitars under the all Irish lyricism, the track captures the feverish, joyous energy of the SexyTadhg’s live shows whilst showcasing their endless creative flow and striking musicality.

SexyTadhg explains: “The Slag of Carlow Town was born from my first time integrating the fiddle and trad music into a performance as SexyTadhg, during my musical ‘Television’ which debuted at Dublin Fringe Festival. After that debut, I began bringing it into live shows with my band, and every time I took out the fiddle, the audience response was electric. There was this unspoken, in-built excitement.

Audiences would just come alive, and it became a bridge between me and them. When I performed it at Cork City Hall, supporting The Mary Wallopers in December 2024, I felt a profound connection with their audience. From that night, I went on to support them across their UK tour, one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. This song has become a cornerstone of my journey, anchoring me in trad music and letting me share its magic with every audience I meet.

The lyrics paint a surreal image of a party featuring ‘Megan The Stallion ag rapáil a rapanaí, Chappell Roan ag canadh mar amhránaí, Lady Gaga lena damhsóirí, is Micheal D Higgins he’s getting all higgildy’. I wanted to blend images and themes of queer and pop culture with Irish culture in hopes that one day this inclusive image of Irish culture would feel tangible and less surreal.”

The new single builds on the momentum of a breakout 2025 following tours across the UK and Ireland with The Mary Wallopers and the release of the critically acclaimed debut EP, Sexy, a politically charged exploration of queer experience that celebrates joy, love, and empowerment while confronting struggle and stigma.

Blending theatrical soul, big band jazz, and pop flair, SexyTadhg has earned praise from BBC Radio 6, RTE 2FM (playlist), RTE Radio 1 (Playlist), Dork, Clash, Notion, Hot Press, Irish Times, and more, and cementing SexyTadhg’s place as a vibrant, fearless voice in Irish music. As well as garnering tastemaker press support, national radio play, SexyTadhg has also made multiple national TV appearances including the Six O’Clock Show, Ireland AM, Ireland In Music, and Irish language shows such as Síorstíl and Glúin Z. Live, they have toured across the UK and Ireland, with appearances at the likes of Fairview Park, Galway Big Top, and Cork Marquee summer gigs, as well as a number of major main stage festival slots, and played countless sold-out headline shows in Ireland.
