‘Backrooms’ Charts Best Monday Ever For R-Rated Horror Pic In June With $7.6M+ – Box Office

Moviegoers continued to submerge themselves into the Backrooms on Monday, shelling out $7.669M.

That’s the best Monday ever for a R-rated horror movie in June, outstripping the $4.3M made by New Line’s The Conjuring 2 on June 13, 2016. As we told you, Backrooms for the 3 Arts-repped Kane Parsons charted the best opening ever for A24 with an $81.4M domestic and $118M global start. The running domestic total over four days for Backrooms is $89M.

Backrooms came very, very close to toppling Paramount’s PG-13 rated World War Z to own the best Monday ever for a horror film in June (that zombie movie defined as action horror), that Mark Forster-directed 2013 movie earning $7.67M on its first Monday in June.

The under $10M Atomic Monster-Blumhouse, 21 Laps, Odd Fellow, Chernin Entertainment co-production Backrooms is expected to hold -55% in its second frame, with around $36M-$37M, potentially upsetting a No. 2 opening for Amazon MGM Studios’ Masters of the Universe ($25M-$35M) at the upcoming weekend B.O. which is expected to be led by Paramount/Miramax’s reboot of Scary Movie ($35M-$45M).

Focus Features/Blumhouse’s Curry Barker directed Obsession was second yesterday with an estimated $5.2M, taking its running cume to $111M. As we told you, it’s already Focus Features top grossing movie ever at the domestic B.O.

Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu was third yesterday with a second estimated Monday of $2.2M and running domestic cume of $139M. The Jon Favreau directed feature is currently pacing 8% behind Solo: A Star Wars Story which ended its North American run at $213.7M.
