The first of Estani’s singles we share today, ‘Tú de Mí Te Acordarás’ is the title track to her 15 song tribute to her grandmother, Rosita Lopez, a Conjunto and Bolero singer in San Antonio during the 60s and 70s. While Rosita Lopez’s music has nearly been lost to the passing of time, Estani is able to reimagine songs that are connected to her grandmother’s extensive recording career.
‘Tú de Mí Te Acordarás’, and ‘Déjame En Paz’, are both currently on the Latin Grammy ballot.
Estani’s childhood was spent growing up surrounded by Conjunto, Tejano, Rancheras and boleros alongside jazz, soul, R&B and pop. However, it was the South Texas music connected to her grandmother that has since become central to her and this project. Estani sees the album as a way of returning Rosita’s voice to a history in which women’s contributions were too often overlooked.
This connection is most deeply apparent on ‘Tú de Mí Te Acordarás’,which was written in 1967 by Anita R. Ovalle, specifically for Rosita Lopez. The song remained part of the family’s musical memory for decades before Estani decided to make it the centerpiece of her album and documentary. For Estani, the track connects three generations of women: its writer, Ovalle; Rosita, for whom it was written; and Estani, nearly six decades later, giving it her own interpretation.
While Estani originally recorded the track as Conjunto, as it was originally intended, she decided to give it a more celebratory interpretation, and recorded it as Cumbia, with the assistance of Grammy Award-winning producer Beto Martinez of Grupo Fantasma, who produced and rearranged the new version while retaining the song’s original melody, story and South Texas roots. Additionally, Martinez mixed both featured songs.
The music video for ‘Tú de Mí Te Acordarás’ makes good use of family photographs and archival still images. As Estani commented, “Watching these images come to life was surreal and deeply emotional”.
