Spending five months developing the project, Ute Lemper created versions of her own vocals in a range of languages for her new single, ‘MOTHERS’.
Motherhood is an experience that crosses all borders, and while it’s one that’s shaped by culture, circumstances, and location, at its very heart is the instinct to protect a child. Bringing that idea into focus with ‘MOTHERS’, Ute Lemper honours women all over the world.
While she used AI to create versions of her own vocals in various languages, it’s for the specific purpose of overcoming any barriers, so that the same sentiment can reach people all over the world, the lyrics speaking to protection, dignity, tolerance, equality and the responsibility adults carry toward the next generation.
Mothers are described as refuges and strength, women who “fight and pray for freedom and love”, and then the perspective is changed to focus on the children – “All children are equal in our world,” Lemper writes, as she connects the role of a mother to a broader plea against the teaching hatred and division.
The music video which accompanies the song sees animated scenes of mothers, women and children representing different cultural backgrounds, while the titles, and imagery, the many different language versions of the song, giving several forms through which one central idea can be seen, heard and understood.
Lemper hopes mothers in different countries will eventually perform the song themselves and she envisions gatherings in multiple cities where women from different parts of the world could sing it together: mothers carrying the message forward in their own languages and voices.
