Townies have responded toWednesday‘s song ‘Townies’ by releasing a track of their own named ‘Wednesday’ – check it out below.
The Boston-formed, Los Angeles-based band – made up of Tom Lynch, Chris Magnani and Nolan Melia – released the single last Wednesday (August 12) through Brain Synthesizer.
They firstsignalledtheir intention to reciprocate Wednesday’s track around the time of the release of the ‘Bleeds’ album last September, on which ‘Townies’ appears. “Waittilthey hear Wednesday by Townies,” they wrote at the time.
The track isan angsty, pent-up emo track with chunky guitar riffs anda melodic through line thatbuilds toa fuzzy, frenetic payoff.

Wednesday’s ‘Townies’,which appeared onNME‘s list of the best songs of 2025, was written by frontwoman Karly Hartzman about a friend who was subjected to sexual rumours and humiliation when they were teenagers.

Speaking toNMEabout the track last year, Hartzman said:“She wasn’t holding on to the anger at those people, but you know how sometimes you’re more defensive of your friend than yourself?”
“I feel like it was just nice to tell someone that someone loves you, ‘I feel this deeply about something that happened in high school’, and I think thatdynamic isreally interesting. It was a fascinating thing to think about how people interpret women being ‘promiscuous’.”

Last month,Hartzman also joined Hayley Williams at the Newport Folk Festival to perform ‘Mirtazapine’. She has alsocontributed to Weezer’s recent single ‘Skinny Dipper’, which will be on their upcoming record ‘The Gold Album’.
