Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 19 Ends In a Way That Will Break Mickey’s Heart

At the end of Sheriff Country’s last episode, we were left with an unsurprising cliffhanger.

Thanks to her father’s involvement in the illegal weed co-op, Mickey was considered compromised, and why wouldn’t she be?

I have no issue with the DEA looking into her ability to act as the sheriff, considering she did have an illegal weed operation running right under her nose.

However, that’s not the main arc of the hour. There’s a lot more going on, getting us ready for an intense and heartbreaking Sheriff Country Season 1 Finale.

Skye’s Sobriety Is Tested

With everything happening around her, Skye admits during Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 19 that she’s struggling.

She’s turned to drugs when things go wrong in her life, and with her grandfather now in jail (and her mom being the one to arrest him), she’s struggling with her sobriety.

The fact that she is talking about it is huge. This is a step forward for her and shows that she is trying to fight for that sobriety.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

So, when she was found on the ground from a drug overdose, I was initially uncertain.

It seemed too obvious that Skye would decide to give up the fight when she had a sponsor trying to help her.

I also knew that there was a reason she chose Miranda’s side when Mickey went to the office.

Skye is a smart girl, and she was always going to be the one to figure out the real situation.

All of this together told me immediately that someone tried to have Skye murdered in a way that looked like a drug overdose.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

I think, eventually, someone would have put all the pieces together. It just so happened that Mickey and Dawson/Agent Kane (what are we calling him?) were there as all the clues came in.

Of course, Mickey knew her daughter well enough to know the type of drugs Skye would take if she was going to relapse.

Kane had worked plenty of drug cases to know what any sort of drug comes up as when the body tries to reject it.

This is where Rick Fraley messed up spectacularly.

If he wanted to make it look like an overdose, he should have left that smoothie behind.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

And if he really wanted to get rid of that evidence, he should have just taken the smoothie.

It was one of the most realistic elements of Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 19, though. He wasn’t a trained killer, and he had probably never done anything like this before.

Of course, he was going to mess up and need someone to clean up his mess.

Another realistic element was Travis’ reaction to learning the truth, and I adored this moment.

Travis has been so passive. Mickey is the one who runs into danger, and she’s the one who has acted on emotion before.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

In this moment, the tables turn. Travis is a dad, and he will do whatever he can to protect his little girl.

Finding out that your own family is capable of something like this is heartbreaking, and Christopher Gorham made me just want to wrap him up in a tight hug.

Then I have to give praise to guest star Maren Morris, who played Skye’s sponsor, Hazel.

There are always a lot of questions about accidentally breaking sobriety, and they’ve come up recently as people have tricked sober people into eating rum cake — and I’m not getting into my anger about that.

Hazel makes it clear that Skye still has her sobriety.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

She didn’t intentionally take drugs. They were hidden in the smoothie, and she had no reason to think that Rick would even try to kill her with them.

Sure, having the drugs in her system could make the next few months a little harder, because of withdrawals, but Skye didn’t choose this.

She doesn’t have to give up her six-month chip, and she still gets to have her nine-month chip.

I do wish Sheriff Country would go into Skye’s sobriety and connections with others in NA and AA a little more, as Skye asking Hazel to give her the nine-month chip could have meant so much more.

It’s something to work on during Sheriff Country Season 2.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

It Was Always Going to Come Back to Family

It’s not just Rick Fraley that we were meant to be suspicious of this whole time.

As mentioned, Skye knew something suspicious was happening and was going after the documents that would confirm it.

Wes is so proud that Skye is proving herself as a Fox, but that’s probably not a great thing, considering the situation he is in or the one he’s put his daughter in.

I know that we’re all supposed to be angry at Wes for his actions, but I still felt bad for him when Mickey left him without answers about Skye.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

This is a man who has tried to do right by his family, and he’s felt guilty when he’s acted against the law throughout Sheriff Country Season 1.

It’s not easy to change, though, and that’s what Wes is showing us. People do relapse, whether it’s in addiction or personality.

That doesn’t mean Mickey isn’t right for the anger she currently feels. Everything happening to her right now is because of Wes.

However, I’m not going to hate on Wes, and I thought he was going to have a heart attack when Mickey walked out of the room without giving him an answer.

It’s Miranda we need to be angry toward.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

Not only did Rick try to kill Skye, but Miranda is the one behind all the threats against the weed growers.

She’s the one who hired the goons to put pressure on people, going so far as to almost kill them.

And she’s the reason Hank is currently in the hospital — Cassidy’s concern for Hank made me smile.

The Sheriff Country Season 1 Finale is sure to focus on the takedown, but it will also lead to heartbreak.

Despite all the cop shows I’ve watched, I did not see Kane turn out to be the one working for Miranda.

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

I didn’t see him being the one covering up Rick’s mistakes in the past — going all the way back to the murder investigation against Skye — or as the one who killed Maguire and put Hank in the hospital.

I feel like I should have seen it, but Kane was so sweet.

It just goes to show that the good guys really aren’t the good guys.

I now have many questions about Kane, including why he was even in Edgewater for that undercover mission at the start of the season. Was it an undercover mission? Was it to do with Miranda?

(Darren Goldstein/CBS)

It was a great ending to the episode, and now I’m ready for the season finale.

However, part of me wishes this reveal had come a couple of episodes earlier, so we could see Kane up to some shady things, but I’m also glad for Mickey that the Band-Aid will be ripped off pretty fast in the next episode.

Can Sheriff Country Season 2 deliver something good for Mickey in her love life, please?
