With her single, ‘Part-Time Preacher’, Lisa Michelle Anderson captures everyday life with all its emotions, warmth, and honesty. Released on the 11th of September, the track is from her new album, ‘Spend A Little Time’, which dropped on the 18th of September.
Anderson takes her life experiences and weaves them into her songs, with her music a soulful blend of Americana, folk, and rock.
Piano, a steady drumbeat and her own acoustic guitar support Anderson as she sings ‘Part-Time Preacher’. It’s fittingly reminiscent of a church band, stripped back and relaxed, drawing in the listener and compelling them to listen to the story she tells. Anderson sings of the confusion of falling for someone – a part-time preacher no less – and having those feelings distract her from her everyday commitments. There’s a lot of imagery that will be familiar to those of us who’ve been pulled in by the charisma and allure of other such people: while their message may ostensibly be on heavenly things, the means by which they convey it can sometimes be anything but Godly. Temptation is around every corner, and confusion abounds, because, if this part-time preacher is God’s representative on earth, then how can what they do or say be wrong? Additionally, how can it be wrong to fall for them?
The part-time preacher however justifies their behaviour by reminding us that they’re only a preacher part of the time: the rest of the time they don’t have to be responsible for the feelings or indeed, souls, of others. Handy compartmentalisation.
